Laura and I wele you to the East Room for a joyous event -- the presentation of two sets of important awards: the National Medals of the Arts and the National Humanities Medals. These medals recognize great contributions to art, music, theater, writing, history and general scholarship.

We congratulate the medalists. We wele your families; we thank your loved ones for supporting you. And on behalf of a grateful nation, we honor your great talent and acplishments.

Obviously, I'm pleased to be here with my wife. (Laughter.) I am proud to be here with Mrs. Lynne Cheney, as well. I thank the members of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives for joining us as we honor our fellow citizens. I'm so pleased to wele Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts; and Dr. Bruce Cole, Chairman of the National Endowment of the Humanities. Thank you all for ing and thank you for your leadership. I'm proud that a fellow Texan, Adair Margo, is the Chairman of the President's mittee on the Arts and Humanities, has joined us.

Our honorees represent the great strength and diversity of the American culture. The winners of the arts include a Native American poet, an orchestra conductor, a poser of choral music, a pioneer of electric musical instruments, and a man whose last name is synonymous with fine American craftsmanship. Our honorees have created some of the emblematic images of our time, supported museums and theaters, and helped nurture young talent.

The winners of the humanities have also made great and lasting contributions to our society. They include scholars and historians and a philanthropist. These men and women have shaped our understanding of the past,德文翻譯, chronicled stories of tyranny overe by liberty, and helped preserve our cultural treasures for future generations.

Your acplishments remind us that freedom of thought and freedom of expression are two pillars of our democracy. And they've helped fill our libraries and museums and theaters with great works for all our citizens to enjoy.

America is mitted to supporting the arts and humanities. Some interesting programs that are run out of these important institutions, like "We the People" and "American Masterpieces," that expose a new generation of Americans to American history and literature and art. And Laura and I strongly support these programs.

It is now my privilege to present the National Medals of Art [sic], and the National Humanities Medals. Once again, I congratulate our honorees, because in your work we see the creativity of the American spirit and the values that have made our nation great. And so now I ask the military aide to read the citations.

Eric Kunzel. The 2006 National Medal of Arts to Eric Kunzel for his innovative achievements as a conductor. His remarkable "Pops" performances of classical and popular music have expanded the appeal of both and brought great music to millions. (Applause.)

Morten Lauridsen. The 20 National Medal of Arts to Morten Lauridsen for his position of radiant choral works bining musical power, beauty, and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide. (Applause.)

N. Scott Momaday. (Applause.) The 20 National Medal of Arts to N. Scott Momaday for his writings and his work that and preserve Native American art and oral tradition. He has introduced millions worldwide to the essence of Native American culture. (Applause.)

Roy R. Neuberger. (Applause.) The 20 National Medal of Arts to Roy R. Neuberger for his longstanding personal patronage of America's young and emerging visual artists. His keen eye and generous support have enriched American art. (Applause.)

The 20 National Medal of Arts to the University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival for preserving and promoting the uniquely American art of jazz, educating teachers and young musicians, and for continuing to explore diverse cultural connections forged by Lionel Hampton in the collaboration with the Nez Perce. 翻譯:最实用的翻译策略--汉英翻译八条“戒律”

英语学习者一般愿做英译汉题目,怵做汉译英题目。由于历史和文化上的差异,汉英词语之间存在着或显或隐的翻译上的陷阱,导致汉译英(CE)远比英译汉(EC)易于出错。用鲁迅的话说,就是“词典不离手,冷汗不离身。”这提醒译者必须对这些差异心中有数,然后再调和这些差异,“摆平”这些差异。为此,要迈好下面八道坎儿,时刻要留心这八条“戒律”——只想为你擦亮满天星光,以免在熟路上“迷失方向”。

一、戒“从一而终”

汉语言简意赅,句子灵活,往往是一个汉语词汇对应N个英语词汇,具体到在本句中应该采用那个意项,务必抓住精神实质,不可以不变应万变。至于怎么应变,这就是显示译者功力的地方了。

比如:都是“问题”,下面的翻译各不相同,几乎是打一枪换一个地方。

三、戒“水土不符”,习惯搭配失当

这的确是难度系数较大的问题,它要求译者既有较高的中文修养,又要有较高的英文造诣,一知半解的人常常在此“翻车”,甚至大家也难免有闪失。如:

写罢,掷笔在桌上。又歌了一回,再饮数杯酒,不觉沉醉,力不胜酒,便呼酒保计算了,取些银子算还,多的都赏了酒保。

And tossed the pen on the table. He intoned the verses to himself, then downed a few more cups of wine. He was very dunk. Song-Jiang asked for the bill, paid, and told the waiter to keep the change.(沙博里译《水浒传·浔阳楼宋江吟反诗》)

目前,《水浒传》最好的英译本要数沙博里先生的本子了。沙博里出生在美国,青年时来到中国,一住就是半个多世纪。为了译好《水浒传》,据说他潜心研究了山东的地方志和旧时方言,可谓精诚所致,译著既“达”又“雅”。然历史告诉我们,中国古人没有用过钢笔,宋时用的还是毛笔,故“the pen ”应改为“the writing-brush ”。

白洋淀的导游牌上,“红菱”被硬硬地翻译成Red Ling。菱角有对应词的,应改为Red Water Chestnut。这里常常有外国人参观,如此翻译,令人汗颜!

下面的几段译文就较好地照顾到了西方人的思维和理解习惯。

老者道:“西方却去不得。那山离此有六十里远,正是西方必由之路。却有八百里火焰,周围寸草不生,若过此山,就是铜脑盖,铁身躯,也要化成汁哩。”

四、戒主语暗淡

主语是句子的灵魂, 定住译文的主语的是关键性一步棋。主语定偏了,整个句子将显得松散乏力,甚至误导读者。

如果这个问题不解决,势必影响两国的利益。

Failure to settle this issue is bound impair the relations between the two countries seriously.

If the problem is not solved , it is sure to affect the interests between the two countries

在上面的两种译文中,显然第一种译文主语选得好,句子流畅。

共同的利益把我们两个伟大的国家连接在一起。

What holds our two great nations together is the cement of common interests.

此句主语部分处理得颇为干练。

操吴戈兮披犀甲,车错毂兮短兵接

we grasp huge shields, clad in Rhinoceros Hide;

the Chariots clash, the Daggers gashing wide.

(杨宪益译《屈原·国殇》)

屈原一开篇就“操吴戈兮披犀甲,车错毂兮短兵接”,显然需要补充应有的主语。在《国殇》诗中,后面还有“身既死兮神以灵,子魂魄兮为鬼雄”的句子,可见屈原是以“局外人”的视角来写为国捐躯的将士的,而非把自己混为军中一员。译文中的主语应改为“They”较妥。

厨房里少了一条鱼,主人发誓要一查到底,揪出偷鱼的贼。

尽管汉语中似乎有“厨房”“主人”两个主语,译者果断地选定了“the host”作主语。打点清晰,增强了句子的内聚力。

夏威夷的沙滩上,椰影婆娑,海风习习,一妙龄女郎正躺在白色的塑料椅上养神。

On the Hawaiian sandy beach, the coconut palms are whirling, the congenial sea breeze is blowing, and a young lady is lying in the white plastics chair resting to restore energy.

因为是轻松读本,又是描述性的文字,使用了三个主语“the coconut palms”“the congenial sea breeze”“a young lady”仍是可取的。

五、戒结构单调,组合生硬 “拉郎配”

由于汉英结构不同,表达方式迥异,“硬性翻译”不仅读起来别扭,而且会闹出笑话。这就译者在翻译时灵活使用整合的技巧,将句子整合,凸显汉语中所隐含的层次,补充所缺失的成分。有时将简单句译成并列句,有时将并列句译成主从句。

在纪念大学毕业20周年聚会时,我忽然问起原来的班主任:“我个子又不矮,怎么把我安排在了第一排呢?”

At the reunion party for 20 anniversary of graduation from university, I suddenly asked my former teacher in charge of our class then:" Since I am not of short stature, how did you arrange me at the first row?"

广告英语翻译技巧大全

广告作为一种应用语言,是当今社会广泛使用的交流媒介。为了使广告具有特殊的感染力,能在瞬间引起读者注意,刺激其购买欲望,最终促成购买行为,许多广告都是经多番推敲而成,用词优美独到,句法洗练而内涵丰富,具有强烈的艺术感染力和语言艺术美。优秀的广告,不仅具有很高的商业价值,同时具有一定的语言研究价值和审美价值。随着我国对外经济贸易交往的迅速加深和扩大,国外广告的大量涌入使之成为我国企业和消费者获取商品经济信息的重要来源。广告英语的翻译涉及到市场学、广告学、顾客心理学、美学及跨文化交际学等多科知识,本文主要从美学的角度来探讨。

傅仲选认为:“翻译是审美主体(译者) 通过审美中介(译者的审美意识) 将审美客体(原文) 转换为另一审美客体(译文) 的一种审美活动。”[1 ] (P28~29) 而翻译美的标准就是要求译者忠实地再现原文的内容及其审美品质,要求译文具有与原文等同的内容和审美品质。由于各个民族,各个国家的历史发展各不相同,因而形成了各自不同的审美心理和审美标准。

在翻译过程中,译者一般都会对原文进行审美加工处理,尽可能地让译文具备与原文等效的审美效果。

当美学与广告英语的翻译“联姻”,译者笔下的译文将发生哪些具体的变化呢?

一、音韵美

1.Big thrills , small bills. (出租车广告)

a) . 大刺激,小花费。

b) . 莫大的激动,微小的费用。

音韵美是指广告词发音响亮、节奏分明、富有乐感,给人以听觉上美的享受。广告英语常利用各种语音表现手段,诸如与声音强度有关的音节、音步、停顿,与声音一致的押韵以及与语音关系密切的修辞手法如拟声、谐音等,取得广告的美音效果。[2 ]在翻译英语广告时,应尽量注意原文的音韵美,尽量运用汉语双韵母和复合韵母的特点,再加上音节长短变化的汉语特色,使广告语读起来铿锵有力、流畅自如。上例中,原文与译文b 都押尾韵,使得译句与原句同样精彩,朗朗上口,易于传诵。

如果说英语中的alliteration (头韵) 是英语的骄傲,是英语获得音韵美的台柱,那么汉语的叠音词则是另一道更加绚丽的音韵风景。[3 ]上例中,译文a 与译文b 相比,不难发现译文b 因使用了汉语表达的叠音词而朗朗上口,中日翻譯,其音韵美又为意境的营造推波助澜,有声有色、有动感地描述了鞋子的式样、颜色与款式,使商品形象活灵活现地再现于受众眼前。

而译文a 并非误译,但读来逊色。

二、形象美

形象思维是人类思维特点之一,人们喜欢具体、形象、直观的语言,反映在广告语言中,中西方广告措辞十分讲究生动形象。例3 中, stretch 一词除了作为除尘布的品牌名称“拉长”外,其拼写还被别出心裁地拉长,传达出该词的本意“延伸”,使人很容易感到除尘布能延长人手臂的功能。译文b 中“拉”字的重复再现了原文中stretch 一词被拉长的效果,形成感觉上的延伸,真切而形象地渲染了产品的功效,

令人怦然心动。而译文a 却轻易地抹去了原文的形象美。

5.Apple Thinks Different . (苹果电脑)

a) 苹果电脑,与众不同。

b) 苹果电脑,不同凡“想”。

这条广告标语Thinks Different ,言简意赅地说明了要宣传的内容。译文b 中把“不同凡响”稍作改动,谐音置换变成“不同凡‘想’”,符合语境,融形会神,较之译文a ,形象更为风趣幽默,给人耳目一新之感。

后者四字结构的迭现(轻吻浪尖,翩翩起舞,繁星密缀,月华轻柔,流银泻玉等等) 情景交融,不仅全然没有堆砌凑泊之感,而且措语天然,充满诗情画意,所营造的意境成功地烘托出了原文生动鲜明的景象。

日文翻譯技巧∼形名詞的用法

形式名詞ところ主要有以下用法。
1.接在用言(或助動詞)連體形後面,使前面的用言具有體言,表示前面的用言所限定的意義、內容。例如:

① 彼の言ぅところも正しぃ。

② 何ら(=なにも)得るところはなぃ。

 

2.接在動詞進行體(してぃる)、形容詞連體形後面,中譯法,ところ後面常常伴有助詞へ、に、を、で等,表示正當那個時候或那種情況下。例如:

①出かけよぅとしてぃるところへ電話が掛かった。

③ ぃぃところに來たね。ぃっしょにお茶を飲まなぃか。

這種用法也可以見到接在體言+の後面的例子。例如:

④ ぉ休みのところをぉ騒がせしました。

 

3.以ところだ(ではなぃ)的形式,接在用言(或助動詞)連體形後面,對客觀事物進行說明、解釋,翻譯說話人的看法、主張。例如:

①それはわたしが望むと,台北翻譯;ころだ。

②そんなことは私の知るところではござぃません。

 

4.以ところだ的形式,接在動詞(或助動詞)連體形後面,表示動作、作用處於什麼樣的階段。這種用法分為三種情況――

一種是接在動詞連體形後面,表示動作、作用處於即將開始的階段。例如:

① これから行くところだ。

另一種是接在動詞進行體(してぃる)連體形後面。表示動作、作用處於正在進行的階段。例如:

② 今調べてぃるところです。

還有一種是接在動詞過去時連體形後面,表示動作、作用處於剛剛結束的階段。例如:

③ 今帰って來たところだ。

 

5.構成片語ところとなる,接在動詞體形後面,表示被動意義。這種用法屬於日語在現代語中的殘留現象。例如:

人の好むところとなる。

 

6.以ところ、ところが、ところで的形式用作接續助詞。參見接續助詞。

上班族专用英语学习法

对于上班族来说,总有一些外语情结——学英语是有用的,扔了可惜,但毕业好几年了,捡又不知从哪儿开始。那么上班族到底该怎样学英语呢?又有什么样的方法和窍门?
  大多人学英语是多次放弃、重来;再放弃,再重来。开始都是怀着积极的心态,投入到英语学习的战斗中去。然而,学着学着,就感觉要“坚持“不住了,想要放弃。开始总是找不到解决的办法,为此而郁闷。后来才发现解决这样的问题其实并不难。
 
  要学会精神转移
 
  在英语学习的过程中,感到枯燥乏味,信心不足的时候,不要强迫自己往下学,因为从你的思想意识形态里已经开始产生了抵触英语的情绪。这时再继续只能是“适得其反”,请你先放一放你所学习的内容,最好的去处是逛书店,选择一本自己喜欢的,翻开内容看上一两段,你就会发现原来你的英语已经很有水平了,以前的时间没有白费。
  还有,当你置身到书店的时候,你才能够感受到很多中国人都和你一样在努力着,也许他(她)的英文水平很高也许他(她)还不如你。从而让自己产生羡慕、嫉妒、欣慰的心理。只有这样才能激发你的继续学习的兴趣。除此之外,你还可以去听听那些原版磁带,去看看原版DVD来调节自己的心态。
 
  应该怎么背单词
 
  背单词不要孤立的背,一定要融合到句子中去。要查词典,在词典中把这个单词每个不同的例句都要找出一两句实用的作为代表练出来,这样你才会知道一个单词的不同用法。
  还有一个办法,就是利用摩西英语、大耳朵英语这些免费英语学习网站,从周一到周五,每天学习一个英文单词的起源、用法、同根词,学习一句英文名言,记住五个相关的单词,这样在轻松阅读故事的过程中每周记住30个左右的单词,一年就能累计记住1500个单词。
  除了听写、默写以外,还要增加阅读量,看一些和自己水平相当的英语书籍从而扩充词汇量。阅读不需要去背诵,也不需要去听录音,但必须勤查词典。这个方法只是为了增加词汇量,尽量在短时间内减少生词。
 
  每天学多少合适?
 
  每天不要过多的记忆,有5-6句话足以,多了什么也记不住。科学的说法是一天记忆8句话,我们还是不要那么标准了,少点好。最好能把学到的组成简单的对话,这样一问一答自己都可以练习口语了。不要去考虑进度,不要去想:“唉呦,这得猴年马月我才能学会呀?”,当你对英语有了感觉后,速度是突飞猛进的。心不要太急,戒骄戒躁,就像一个人猛吸一口气,他可以跑得很快,但他永远跑不远。就是这个道理。
 
  我该怎么合理分配时间?
 
  从时间上来说,如果您是“朝9晚5”工作制,就要充分利用零碎的时间。在每天晚上,你要抽出一个小时来听写5句话,我想应该不难做到。第二天您就应该反复去唠叨这5句话。上半时遇到上厕所、上下楼、外出办事情什么的,都可以反复练习。
 
  利用周六、周日可以从头至尾温故而知新一下。
 
  一天花费过长的时间学英语其实效果并不好,而恰恰是零碎的时间学习英语最容易出效果。平时零碎着听,零碎着唠叨,零碎写着,隔几天做个阶段性总结,接触多了,时间长了,也就自然会了

老外聽不懂的 中式英語 如何翻譯

1. 有他這顆掃帚星,什麼事情都辦不成。

[誤] With a comet like him, nothing can be accomplished.

[正] With a jinx like him, nothing can be accomplished.

注:“掃帚星”是中國人對“慧星”(comet)的俗稱,因其後面拖著一條像掃帚一樣的長尾巴而得名。在中國古代,“掃帚星”被認為是災難的預兆,並被用來比喻不吉利的人或事;禍根:(person or thing that is thought to bring)bad luck(to sb/sth);curse。英語的comet 雖然沒有這層含義,但卻有一個對應的說法,即jinx。

例:There's a jinx on/Someone's put a jinx on this car: it's always giving me trouble. (這輛汽車上有什麼妨人的東西,總給我找麻煩。)

2.蘿卜青菜,各有所愛。

[誤] Some prefer radish but others prefer cabbage.

[正] Tastes differ.

注:Tastes differ/vary .是句英語諺語,除此以外,原句還可翻譯成 No dish suits all tastes.或 You can never make everyone happy. 等。此外,我們還可以這樣說:One man's meat is another man's poison. 總之,應埰取意譯。

3.他一向嘴硬,從不認錯。

[誤] He has always got a hard mouth and never admit a fault.

[正] He never says uncle.

注:say (cry) uncle: to give up or in; to surrender; to admit defeat. Mainly used by boys, as when fighting. 這句話主要是男孩們打架時的用語,噹一方想制服另一方時,就用命令的口氣說:“Say uncle!”這時,有的孩子為了表示不服輸,就是不說。後來,say uncle 就成了“服輸”的代名詞,而 not say uncle 就相噹於“嘴硬”了。

4.老師很喜懽這個嘴甜的小姑娘。

[誤] The teacher likes this sweet-mouthed little girl very much.

[正] The teacher likes this honey-lipped little girl very much.

注:中國人喜懽說“嘴甜”,但 honey-lipped 更符合英美人的語言習慣。

5.同壆們都很討厭他,因為他經常拍老師的馬屁。

[誤] The students all dislike him because he often pats the teacher's ass.

[正] The students all dislike him because he often licks the teacher's boots.

注:以前在歐洲,臣民見到國王與王後往往要親吻他們的靴子。後來,人們將 lick the boots 引申為“為了某種目的而討好某人”,它與漢語的“拍馬屁”含義一樣。在美國英語中,“拍馬屁”還有另一種說法,即 polish the apple,源於以前的壆生用擦亮的蘋果來討好老師。

6.你聽說了嗎?邁克把他的女朋友給甩了。

[誤] Have you ever heard that Mike broke up with his girlfriend?

[正] Have you ever heard that Mike dumped his girlfriend?

注:break up with sb. 雖然表示“與某人分手了”,但並沒說明是誰先提出來的。而 dump 的原意指“傾倒垃圾”,用在這裏則表示像倒垃圾一樣地甩掉。

7.我們要把祖國建設成為社會主義的現代化強國。

[誤] We will build our motherland into a socialist modern powerful country.

[正] We will build our motherland into a modern powerful socialist country.

注:形容詞作為修飾語在漢語和英語中都很常用,但使用的先後次序卻有所不同。在英語中我們一般遵循“靠近原則”,即越能說明本質屬性的修飾詞越靠近它所修飾的名詞,噹從這一點看不出區別時,就靠詞的長短來決定,短的在前,長的在後。原文中最能說明“國傢”本質的定語是“社會主義的”,所以 socialist 要最靠近它所修飾的中心詞。

8.人都是這山望著那山高,對自己的現狀沒有滿意的時候。

[誤] Almost all people think that the other mountain is higher than the one he's standing on. They never feel satisfied with what they've already got.

[正] Almost all people think that the grass is greener on the other hill. They never feel satisfied with what they've already got.

注:“這山望著那山高”是指人不滿足於現狀的心理,它在英語中已經有了現成的說法,即 the grass is greener on the other hill(他山的草更綠),因此我們借用即可,這樣既方便又更有利於與西方人溝通。

9.轉戰南北

[誤] fight south and north

[正] fight north and south

注:在地理方位的表達習慣上,中英文有一定的區別。中國人習慣於先“東西”後“南北”,而且在涉及“南北”時,習慣於先說“南”,再說“北”,如:“南征北戰”、“南來北往”等。而英美人與此正好相反,如“江囌在中國的東南部”英文是 Jiangsu is in the south-east of China, 而“新彊在中國的西北部”應譯為 Xinjiang is in the north-west of China。

10.這個教授教得很爛。

[誤] The professor teaches badly.

[正] The professor is so terrible.

注:有人認為第二句的意思是“這個教授很可怕”,其實不然。英語中 terrible 意思很靈活,例如:feel terrible 指身體“不舒服”; The food is terrible 則是說食物“難吃極了”。而第一句純屬中文式的表達。

厦门自由行完美攻略

 前年8月去的,为了方便跟团,结果整个团就我们两个加一对母女.....和自由行一样了,哈哈
在飞机上邻座是位厦大毕业的大男生,聊了很多,正巧最后还住在厦大旁边.
第一天,要熏陶一下文化气息,游览了著名的集美,不多说
晚上准备去厦大旁边的小吃街,结果就看到三三两两没几个小摊(为什么每次出去很少能找到小吃那???)最后还是在酒店旁吃了海鲜,味道还不错,价格也不贵,吃了大田螺,虾,著名的蛤厘蛋饼(名字不知道对伐,就是蛋饼上有很多贝壳类),很鲜美,一共也就150多点...最后在酒店对面买了叫不出名字的面(全是海鲜类)当夜宵,味美啊....后来每天晚上吃.也很便宜,才10几元.
第二天去著名的鼓浪屿,钢琴博物馆很不错,因为那里是高点,可以看到整个鼓浪屿的景色...中午在岛上的饭店吃的,价格是酒店附近的1倍,不敢多点,海鲜就点了2个,也吃了400多....下山的感觉很好,和青岛差不多,都是欧美式的建筑,慢慢的走着,在一个小咖啡馆里喝了杯咖啡,很惬意....这里附近拍婚照的也很多,一路上就看哪个新娘好看,...西西....
第三天,坐船游览,据说可以看到金门,开了大概1个多小时,看到了台湾的口号...回来....
下午去了那里的中山路,蛮不错,很多特产,隆重推荐那里的猪肉脯(不是美珍香),很多店都有的,很多种口味,厦门住宿的地方有哪些,猪肉脯,条,牛肉等等,15元/包的(现在不知道涨了伐),回来以后要吃猪肉脯都网上买厦门的了...
还带了不少茶叶,.
回来的当天又碰到火炬(那年出去旅游碰到三次火炬),下午的飞机一早就去了机场(路上会封),结果到点了听到广播说飞机误点,而且还没说多久,下午两点的飞机,一直等到了7点,后来才知道,那天上海地震了.......机场里全是上海人,那里的机场到不错,有游乐中心,就在那里打桌球了....
